The Best Easter Books Kindergarten and How to Teach using Them!

Are you looking for Easter books for kindergarten? I have you covered! I loved using children’s Easter books when I taught kindergarten.

Reading aloud was my favorite part as a kindergarten teacher! So much so, that we did it multiple times a day.

It made for a great transition right after specials. The children knew that every day after special it was time to come back sit on the rug and I would read them a story.

As a mom, I love changing out the children’s books in our home regularly! You can see me in action on my Instagram where I give behind the scenes. This includes information all about how I store children’s books in our home.

How to Catch the Easter Bunny By Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton

These books are taking storm in the world of children’s books. We have How to Catch a Leprechaun if that one is something you’re interested in. I love that these books allow children to think in different ways.

Many young children want to “see Santa” or “catch the Easter Bunny” and these books give ideas on how you might do that.

Some easy ways to use this book with reading comprehension are:

    • Predictions: Have the students predict if they think the Easter Bunny will be caught. You can also have them predict how they will try to catch the Easter Bunny.

    • STEAM Activities: Have students create or construct a trap to catch the Easter Bunny.

    • A sequence of Events: Draw or write the order of the book. Afterward, have the students draw or write about their favorite part!

It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny By Marilyn Sadler

This book is kept in our home with my children’s Easter books. It is great if you want to do an “Easter-themed” but you can’t necessarily call it Easter.

My children love this book because it makes them laugh! Who doesn’t love a good light-hearted book?

With this book you could easily teach students:

  • Persuasive Writing: Write about all the reasons being a bunny is easy or not easy. You can do this as a whole group on chart paper or have students write it with you.

  • Use the writing prompt: If you could live with any animal what animal would it be?

The Great Eggscape! By Jory John and Pete Oswald

If you haven’t read “The Bad Seed” I would RUN to get it now! It’s perfect for social-emotional learning!

The Great Eggscape is a book perfect for Easter books kindergarten! This time the eggs are playing a game of hide-and-seek.

Shel doesn’t want to play. Do you ever feel that way? I know I do! But this time he reluctantly decides to play anyway.

Some ways I would use this book in my classroom for teaching are:

  • Problem and Solution: Will the eggs come together to find the missing egg? They have to use teamwork to find the egg that is missing.

  • Vocabulary: Throughout the store, you’ll see different fruits, vegetables, and foods sold at the grocery store. You can have students make a list of different items they see.

Pete the Cat Big Easter Adventure By Kimberly and James Dean

In my house, we love Pete the Cat! What’s not to love? I know my children have studied him in their preschool classes.

Pete the Cat’s original story allows for social-emotional learning, colors, and problem/solution.

In this Pete the Cat Easter book, Pete has to dress up like a bunny to complete the Easter Bunny’s job. He ends up looking so silly because he has to put on ears, a tail, and a nose!

Some could argue it’s a big young for kindergarten, but I think kindergarteners would still enjoy the funny story!

This Easter book kindergarten would be perfect to use this as a “favorite part” writing. Ask children throughout the story if they enjoy it and what they enjoy about the story. Then make a list.

They can use the list that the class made to write their favorite part of the story at the end.

Fancy Nancy and the Missing Easter Bunny By Jane O’ Connor

What happens when JoJo’s class bunny goes missing at the Easter egg hunt? You’ll have to read this book to find out!

I would use this book to talk about pets. Start by asking the children if they have a pet, or discuss the classroom pet. Then, ask how ways to take care of a pet. Highlight the ways that Nancy and her friends have to help take care of the pet rabbit.

Next, have students write or discuss together ways to take care of a pet. Finally, have students make a list of ways to take care of a pet.

When students make lists in their writing, it can easily turn into how-to writing. Check out Kristina Smekens if you are looking for more information on list writing and how-to writing in kindergarten.

Happy Easter, Little Critter By Mercer Mayer

If you are reading this list and haven’t read Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter list, go order it right now! These sweet books regularly show up on my book lists for good reason.

They are told from the viewpoint of the Little Critter. He does a wonderful job of explaining to the reader what experiences he is going through with his siblings.

They make the perfect Easter book kindergarten and I highly recommend them for your home library!

Happy Easter, Mouse! By Laura Numeroff

Our favorite mouse is back! This time he’s trying to figure out who is leaving all of these colorful eggs around his home.

If you have students that are still working on language and vocabulary this book is great. Happy Easter, Mouse! uses a variety of words like, under, and on. You can also add in words like beside or beneath to expand on this idea.

Some vocabulary words that this book highlights are:

  • Rocking Chair
  • Sofa
  • Desk
  • Color Words
  • Covers
  • Counter
  • & More!

The Easter Egg By Jan Brett

The Easter Egg is a sweet book about a rabbit named Hoppi that is working hard to make the best Easter egg. If he can accomplish his goal he’ll get to help the Easter Rabbit with his deliveries.

There are many ways to use these Easter reading books:

  • STEAM: Have students create and decorate their own Easter egg
