4th of July Books for Toddlers and Preschoolers

If I had to pick a favorite holiday, I would be torn between the 4th of July and Christmas. This is why today I’m so excited to write about 4th of July books for toddlers and preschoolers!

I love summer so add in a holiday that celebrates; the great country of The United States of America, summer picnics, swimming pools, and fireworks I’m all in! But this holiday can be a lot, especially for our youngest firecrackers. Toddlers are hitting so many developmental milestones and yet they are beginning to realize that when they sleep the world is still going on around them.

So how do we prepare them for holidays and celebrations? My answer will always be with books. It makes it relatable. They can see other people or animals celebrating as they will be soon. The more they can interact with something before it happens the better they will be prepared to go.

You see, it’s the same with you. If I told you, “We are going to a park for the holiday.”. You would ask “What park? What city? What will they have there? Is there a playground or a swimming pool? How many people will be there? Will I know any of the people there?”. Our kids are wondering the same questions but they may not have the words or knowledge of how to ask them.

So I hope you can use some of the books on this list to help your little ones be prepared and ready for the 4th of July this summer.

You’re My Little Firecracker By Nicola Edwards

This new book from Natalie Marshall is adorable for babies and toddlers!

Although it won’t teach your toddler about the holiday of the 4th of July, it offers a great deal of vocabulary. It also has cute cutouts and engaging bright pictures.

Corduroy’s 4th of July By Don Freeman

If your family has an annual picnic for July 4th, this book is wonderful for getting them ready!

Corduroy is spending his day eating festive food, going to the pool, playing games, and of course watching a firework display! I love using this book to get our little ones ready for a big holiday like the 4th of July.

You can use simple stories like this to prepare them for your families plans.

Curious George Parade Day By H. A. Rey

Curious George is always up to something and this time he’s headed to the parade! I like using this book for any time we have a parade to go to. Whether it’s a festival in town or a holiday parade.

Don’t forget that a parade is full of sensory for our little ones. Between loud bands, trucks honking, and people cheering it can be a lot to take in.

The more we can prepare our toddlers, the better. I love using this Curious George book for just that!

This Curious George book is offered as both a paperback and a board book. I’ll be sure to link both options for you.

Hello, Fourth of July! By Martha Zschock

Are you looking for ways to explain the 4th of July to your little ones? If so this is the book for you! This story features a parent Eagle that is describing the United States history and symbols to his child.

I love that it uses child friendly words and teaches children about the great country of the United States!

The Night Before the Fourth of July By Natasha Wings

The Night Before the 4th of July is a part of a best-selling series and there is no question as to why! Amy Wummer brings to life the way that we get ready to celebrate holidays for little ones.

Sometimes the best part of a holiday is getting ready the day before anyway, right? This time people are getting ready for picnics and fireworks.

Daniel’s First Fireworks By Becky Friedman

If Daniel Tiger is a favorite character of your child, this book is sure to be a hit! Daniel is headed to the fireworks but a little scared that they will be too loud!

I love that this book teaches it’s okay to do scary things sometimes. We just need to rely on our loved ones to be there for us.

The Berenstain Bears God Bless Our Country By Jan Berenstein

Are you looking for a way to teach your children about the freedoms that come in our country?! I love using this book for that purpose!

Berenstein Bears a classic because they have been around for more than 50 years! They are wonderful books bc the bear family goes through the same things that children go through. This time they are headed to the local parade decked out for the 4th of July.

4th of July By Emma Berne

Offer your child some rhythm and rhyme this summer by including this 4th of July book into your child’s library! They will learn about 4th of July traditions using the included music access.

What Does it Mean to be American? By Rana DiOrio

Does being American mean eating hotdogs and watching fireworks? This may be a hard concept for many children- especially our toddlers and preschoolers who have a hard time thinking outside of their world.

That’s why this book is perfect for introducing the idea that being an American is about being free. It’s about having the freedom to dream and to be whatever we want to become.

I hope you found this list of 4th of July Books for Toddlers and Preschoolers useful! Let me know what book you are planning to pick up for your toddler today! I can’t wait to talk to you more about it in the comments below.

Hi, I'm Ashley E!

I teach moms and teachers how to inspire a love of reading in the early years. I live in Ohio with my husband & two boys. Our favorite places to be are at the beach & Disney World. But most of the time you’ll find me at school teaching, working out in our basement, or blogging at home. So grab your favorite cup of coffee, tea, or (if you’re at all like me) water & let’s go through this thing called life together.
