How to Organize a 3-Year-Old’s Room

It’s amazing how quickly a child’s needs change from being a baby to toddler and before you know it they are off to college (or so though they say). Luckily for me, I haven’t experienced that yet! However, my son’s room has gradually changed from being a nursery to a little boy’s room. That’s why today I wanted to take to discuss how to organize a 3-year-old’s room.

I wanted to take today to discuss the functionality of his room. How we have set up so he can help keep it clean, play in it, and have what he needs. I use his room as a place to hold toys, clothes, and most importantly (to me) a safe place to sleep.

I value sleep in our house. Therefore it’s important to me that each of my kids has their own space to make that happen (even if it’s the same room as another child). We’ll get into this more later.

I would love to hear in the comments below how you organize toys, clothes, and other items you keep in your kid’s rooms. I’m sure my ideas will change as they do but this is what works for us for now.

Don’t forget to share this with a mom of a toddler looking for ideas on how to organize a 3-year-old’s room.

Below you will read about all the ways I organize my 3-year-old’s room.

How do I Store Toys in his Room?

Let’s start with toys because I know they can get out of hand pretty quickly (especially with Christmas right around the corner). I have an 8-shelf cube laying down horizontally in his room with 6 cube bin organizers to help contain his toys.

I have intentionally left two of the shelves blank to allow an open shelf concept at his level for books. We encourage as much reading as possible in our home so I feel that having books in his room at his level does just that.

Inside the cubes, I have one full of balls, one full of a train set that all came together with blocks, another one is miscellaneous, and the last one is legos. I have left two of them empty to allow for new Christmas toys he’ll get soon.

I use the top of the shelf for extra bins of a tractor he enjoys playing with, a dinosaur, and a Lego Duplo set. Beside the shelf he has a small piano and a tool bench he was gifted from his grandparents for his birthday.

Above the shelf he has two shelves on the wall from his nursery that are full of memerabia, picture frames, some sentimental books, and other odds and ends. He has a rug on the floor with a Mickey road map and the space is complete with a beanbag.

What Kind of Bed Do I Have for a 3-Year-Old?

This was a big topic of conversation for my husband and I this summer. We knew that our son was quickly growing out of his toddler bed. However, we weren’t sure what we wanted to get to replace it.

My husband was all about getting a bunk bed for him. That’s what he grew up with and he thought it would provide the most function as he gets older. While I agree that it will provide function for friends or family who want to stay over it is a lot of for a 3-year-old.

I wanted a full size bed on the other hand. I thought that it would allow a friend to sleep over and provide a sense of safety at such a young age.

Eventually, we settled on the bunk bed. At first, the boys were VERY into the top bunk and we didn’t let them in the room without us. After more time they aren’t as into it and have settled into the idea that it’s there and they don’t always need to climb on it.

It has a full bed on the bottom and a twin bed on the top. We liked it because we know he’ll have it for years to come and it will provide a nice place for sleepovers in his future.

How do I Organize Clothes?

I keep all of his current clothes in a dresser we got as a hand-me-down from my brother. It is a child’s size dresser with 6 drawers. In the top drawers, I keep his underclothes and socks. I also have old picture books, cards, and other baby items in the top drawers.

I used to also keep diapers, wipes, and pull-ups in these drawers but now he is fully potty trained (day and night!) what a relief!

In the middle drawers, I keep pajamas and swimsuits. Beside that drawer, I keep shirts like long sleeve shirts, tee-shirts, and sweatshirts. In the bottom drawer, I keep pants and some summer outfits. The last drawer is full of extra sheets for his full-size bed.

What Do I Keep in the Closet?

In his closet, I keep clothes that I buy ahead of time. Right now he has a lot of 4t, and 4/5 clothes for this next summer. I am always on the lookout for discounted clothes in the next size up. My kids have always been right on size when it comes to clothes and therefore I’m able to shop for them ahead of time.

In the bottom of his closet is a box where I put clothes that he grows out of. Luckily he doesn’t go through clothes as quickly as he used to. When the box is full I move it to his brother’s room.

He also has a huge box of mega blocks in the bottom of his closet along with some play tents. We keep these in there because he doesn’t play with them often enough to keep them out all the time. However, they are available if he does choose to play with them.

At the top of his closet is more bedding including baby blankets, extra blankets for his bed, and an extra mattress pad. I also keep extra toys at the top of his closet that I like to “pull out on a rainy day”.

The last thing that is in his closet is a box of baby shower and birthday cards. There are also milestone papers from his pediatrician from baby doctor appointments.

Conclusion

Overall, a lot of the ways I organize my 3-year-old’s room have just grown with him from his nursery days. We have changed and adapted it to fit his needs now.

Don’t leave without telling me how you organize your children’s room and something that is your favorite part of their room. I can’t wait to talk to you in the comments below!
