New Mom Must-Haves

Are you looking for ideas for gifts for a new mom or some great new mom must-haves? I have a new mom on my Christmas list this year and we couldn’t be more excited! My sister-in-law and brother are expecting their first child any day now!

This got me thinking about what kind of things to get a new mom for Christmas or even better … what to surprise a new mom with when going to meet the baby for the first time. Things are a bit different from this concept in 2020 as meeting a new baby rarely happens at a hospital these days.

However, you can always call the hospital to see if they allow drop off gifts, deliveries, or wait until they get home to drop something off. After having my two sons I have developed quite a list of the perfect new mom gift ideas.

Don’t forget to share this list with someone looking to buy for a new mom or friend who is about to have her first baby!

Below you will read about gift ideas and new mom must-haves.

1. Ask Her/Check the Registry

Most moms already have an idea of what they think they’ll need for the baby or what they believe will make things easier when the baby does get here. I mean thats why they spent hours creating a registry.

I suggest you check the registry to see if there are any last-minute items they didn’t receive that might make life easier with their new little one like a nice nursing pillow or baby monitor that they were hoping for.

2. Comfy Clothes

The initial postpartum time comes with a lot of long days and nights! A nice new pair of joggers or soft sweatshirt will be more than appreciated! Sometimes its nice to have a pair of tight fitting leggings to “hold everything” together after delivery as well.

If she’s planning to be a breastfeeding momma, make sure you look for clothes that have “easy access”. Some great items for this would be cardigans, zip-up hoodies, tops with buttons, or sweatshirts that are designed for nursing.

3. Waterbottle

Hydration is so important any time, but especially when recovering after a baby. Again, if she’s breastfeeding this is going to be even more important!

I suggest a nice water bottle or tumbler to help support this need. Don’t forget a few straws if she prefers to use one. It could also be nice to supply some drink mixes to add to her water if she gets tired of it easily.

4. Snacks

As a new mom, she’s going to be flooded with a lot of new responsibilities from her own recovery to taking care of her new baby. Quick and easy snacks may be all she has time to eat.

If you are providing snacks for the support family during labor and delivery, I recommend something that doesn’t have a strong smell. You don’t want to irritate mom during this hard time. Instead, look for snacks with less odor. This could include things like trail mix, granola bars, nuts, or yogurt.

5. Gift Cards

I did a lot of last-minute amazon ordering after I had my second son because he was an unexpected premie. We didn’t have premie clothes or diapers readily available to him. Thankfully my mom and mother-in-law bought, washed, and brought me clothes to the hospital. But I also ordered some from amazon.

If she has any last-minute things that come up after the baby is here it’s nice to have some gift cards to help cover it.

6. Lip Balm

Ever notice how being in a hospital is incredibly drying on your lips? I notice it every time and having a baby really brings out dry skin and lips. A nice lip balm, chapstick, or repair mask would be a great addition to any nice gift you plan to take to the hospital.

7. Dinner/Frozen Meals

Bringing dinner to a new mom is a classic new mom must-have! It would be more than appreciated if you could take over a family favorite meal.

However, if you aren’t a cook or don’t have a lot of time, it’s nice to take an easy meal for the family. Some recommendations are:

  • Muffins
  • Egg Bites
  • Lasagna
  • Soup
  • Crock-Pot Meals
  • Cookies or Lactation Cookies

I hope this gives you some ideas to create the perfect gift basket or gift-ideas for a new mom. Any mom knows the struggle that comes with the fourth trimester so anything we can do to make a new mom smile is more than worth it!

Hi, I'm Ashley E!

I teach moms and teachers how to inspire a love of reading in the early years. I live in Ohio with my husband & two boys. Our favorite places to be are at the beach & Disney World. But most of the time you’ll find me at school teaching, working out in our basement, or blogging at home. So grab your favorite cup of coffee, tea, or (if you’re at all like me) water & let’s go through this thing called life together.
