My toddler is into anything cars, trucks, trains, construction site vehicles, and (well let’s be honest) anything with wheels! That’s why I decided to write all about transportation books for toddlers today!

I am a Train By: Scholastic
“I am a TRAIN” is an adorable book about things that trains do. This book is part of a collection or series of books with different types of vehicles. We also have “I am a Zamboni Machine” and I’ve seen “I am a Firetruck”.
Although they don’t offer a lot of words on each page, my toddler is mesmerized by the train on the outside and the pictures inside. I’ve even seen him push it along a table as if it is a toy train. These books are a must-have for any toddler that loves transportation vehicles!
Chug Chug Tractor By DK
Chug Chug Tractor is a fun book for toddlers that have a love of tractors and animals. It is developmentally appropriate for newborns through 3-year-olds.
I love that it offers sounds, lift-the-flaps, and touch and feel. These are all engaging things for toddlers as they are beginning to learn more about their world.
The Wheels on the Bus By Nosy Crow and Yu-hsuan Huang
What a classic story for any toddler, especially one that loves wheels! We have an old pop-up version of this book but I couldn’t find a good link for it. This book has rave reviews and would be a great addition to any toddler’s library.
Hot Rod Hamster By Cynthia Lord
“Hot Rod Hamster” is a cute story about a hamster and a bulldog that are off on an adventure in all of their stories! The illustrator of these books is Derek Anderson and his drawings all throughout the story are enough to capture a toddler or preschooler.
Cynthia Lord the author uses rhythm, rhyme, and speech bubbles to help the drawings come to life. It’s no wonder that these books are so popular!
5-Minute Stories: Thomas & Friends
If your toddler is into all things wheels, I encourage you to introduce them to Thomas & Friends if they haven’t been already. Thomas is a TV show but comes with books, toys, backpacks, and more!
My boys love the 5-minute stories as they get a bit older and their attention span improves. My 2-year-old currently loves looking at the pictures of the book, but I like these books because they will grow with them over time.
Honk on the Road By Discovery
This book offers amazing sound words and vocabulary. I mentioned in Talking Tips for Toddlers, teaching them sound words is great for their development.
The sound buttons on this book are engaging to toddlers. Interacting with books allows toddlers to work on their language and fine motor skills.
Here We Go By Eric Carle
This book is very versatile for a variety of ages including infants through preschoolers. Infants would love to use this book during tummy time with the engaging sounds, colors and throughout the story.
Toddlers and preschoolers will have fun “driving” the steering wheel within the book. They will also learn sounds of different vehicles including cars, trains, boats, and fire trucks.
Noisy Trucks by Tiger Tales
Toddlers will love using this book to learn about different types of trucks! It includes sensory input in the areas of touch and feel with buttons to make sounds.
This book describes the trucks in simple easy to understand terms for toddlers to better understand the equipment and uses of each truck.
The Little Engine That Could By Watty Piper
The Little Engine that Could is a classic story of a train that teaches toddlers to be persistent and never give up! Don’t forget to add The Little Engine that Could to your toddler’s library of transportation books for toddlers!
Both of my children were gifted this book by the Imagination Library. The imagination library was set up by Dolly Parton as a way for children ages 0-5 to receive free books in the mail. If you are looking for ways to save on building your child’s library, check out the post below:

Noisy Fire Truck By Priddy Books
Noisy Fire Truck is a fun book with lift-the-flaps, lights, and sounds! What more would a toddler want! There is rich vocabulary in this book as it teaches toddlers and preschoolers about the equipment that is needed on different rescue vehicles.
This Train By Paul Collicutt
“This Train” is a simple board book for toddlers with repetition, opposites, and simple wording. I think this book is great for teaching vocabulary and my toddler loves it because it is a train.
There you have it 11 Transportation Books for Toddlers! Let me know what books your toddler has and loves in the comments below! I can’t wait to hear of more vehicle books for toddlers in the comments below.
