Summer Books for Preschoolers

Summer is full of fun for preschoolers. What’s not to love about going to the local pool, splash pad, park, looking at bugs, playing on the playground, going on a family vacation, and camping? Books about summer are a great way to introduce to children what the summer may be like. That’s why I’m writing about summer books for preschoolers.

Summer Books for Preschoolers

Albie the Lifeguard Louise Borden

Albie the lifeguard is a story of a boy that pretends to be a lifeguard at his home every day in the summer. He has a float and of course the all-important whistle! Albie has to learn how to swim like the bigger kids at the pool.

This book is perfect for my 4-year-old because he wants to be just like the lifeguards at the pool too! He has a big imagination like Albie and pretends he is a lifeguard too!

Llama Llama, Family Vacation By Anna Dewdney

Llama Llama is a great series for preschoolers! In fact, if you have previously read any of my book recommendations for toddlers or preschoolers you probably expected a Llama Llama book!

That’s because Anna Dewdley adds rhyming words along with engaging pictures. Llama Llama goes through the typical challenges that preschoolers experience making this series easy to add in conversation with your preschooler.

It’s important when we read with early learners that they learn to make connections with the story. You can ask them about a time they took a vacation or relate the story to another story you may have in your home about taking a vacation. Making connections is an important reading comprehension skill that your child will be working on throughout their academic career in reading.

Biscuit’s First Beach Day By Alyssa Satin Capucilli

Do you have a preschooler that loves dogs?! If so Biscuit is the perfect book series for your little one! Biscuit is a sweet little puppy that is experiencing his first time at the beach. He’s busy learning all about sandcastles, playing in the ocean, and of course seashells!

If your family is headed to the beach or you are looking to teach your preschooler about the beach this summer Biscuit is a great place to start!

The Sandcastle That Lola Built By Megan Maynor

The Sandcastle that Lola Built is a spin on the classic nursery rhyme, The House that Jack Built. Nursery rhymes have many benefits for early literacy including phonemic awareness.! If you are looking for more information on phonemic awareness please check out my link What is Phonemic Awareness, and How do I teach it?

Anyways, this sweet story is full of repetition, rhymes, and a fun story about building sandcastles on the beach! I’m excited to read this story on the way to the beach this summer with my 2 and 4-year-old! I know they will love it.

The Hike By Alison Farrell

If you are planning to take your preschooler on a hike this summer, don’t forget to use this book to help them with a look into all of the great things they may see while out hiking! This book will highlight not only what they will see but also, what they will hear as well!

The illustrations in this book are perfect for kids! I love when a book looks like it was done by a child and this one delivers that. It also offers sound words that are great for phonemic awareness. Check out more phonemic awareness activities, here!

Curious George and the Ice Cream Surprise By Margret & H.A. Rey’s

Who doesn’t love a fun ice cream treat on a hot day?! I know it’s a favorite in my house! This time George is waiting to get his hands on ice cream from the truck! But, what happens when the truck driver leaves to go get a change from the bank? Oh, you know George is always up to something!

This story is a favorite of my 4-year-old and it’s no wonder why! Make sure you put this one on the list of summer books for preschoolers today!

Pete the Cat Play Ball! By James Dean

These little readers are perfect for preschoolers! I love them especially when I can find them with their favorite characters. Not only are they perfect for reading the stories now, but as they get older and become readers they will benefit then as well.

Pete the Cat is learning about baseball in this story. Whether you are headed to the ball field this summer or just planning to play a small game in your back yard. You can definitely give your preschooler a heads up about America’s favorite summer game by reading Pete the Cat, Play Ball!

Did you know you can oftentimes find “I Can Read” books at the Dollar Tree? Don’t forget to check out my great list of Dollar Tree books for Toddlers!

The Little Book of Camping By Zack Bush and Laurie Friedman

The Little Book of Camping is full of amazing reviews! I’ll admit we are not the best campers in my family, in fact, my idea of camping is (well) a night at the Holiday Inn or a cabin nonetheless.

However, I want my children to know about camping and that’s why books like this are so important in my home. Just because I’m not a fan of it, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have knowledge of it. For a lot of families, camping is a big part of their summer and I want my kids to have vocabulary and ideas about the conversations their friends may have about camping.

In this book, they’ll learn about pitching a tent, sleeping in the woods, and picking out a sleeping bag. But they’ll also learn that sometimes camping inside is just as fun (now thats my kind of camping)!

I See Summer By Charles Ghigna

I love this book for our younger readers! It is easy and has few words but the words also match the pictures. It includes rhyming words to point out to our younger readers.

Hi, I'm Ashley E!

I teach moms and teachers how to inspire a love of reading in the early years. I live in Ohio with my husband & two boys. Our favorite places to be are at the beach & Disney World. But most of the time you’ll find me at school teaching, working out in our basement, or blogging at home. So grab your favorite cup of coffee, tea, or (if you’re at all like me) water & let’s go through this thing called life together.
