Thanksgiving Books for Toddlers

Thanksgiving is just around the corner! It’s so important to me that I start introducing my children to the traditions, history, and holidays that I grew up with. That’s why I rounded up some of my favorite books perfect for teaching toddlers about Thanksgiving.

It’s no secret by now that books are my favorite way to teach my children about well … basically anything. Maybe its the teacher in me or maybe it’s just my own love of reading.

Either way, you’ll find me snuggled up with my baby or preschoolers reading a good book as much as they’ll possibly let me! Thankfully for me that’s more times than not.

The First Thanksgiving By: Nancy Davis

This Thanksgiving book for toddlers checks off all the boxes! It’s a board book, has lift the flaps, and it has rhyme! It is a great book for young babies and toddlers who are learning to explore books and just getting to know more about Thanksgiving.

Where is Baby’s Turkey? By: Karen Katz

Karen Katz is at it again with an adorable baby book! This time the baby is looking for the turkey. Your baby or toddler will have fun lifting the flap of this book to find the turkey next. We have so many of these books and they keep coming up on my book lists (for good reason)!

I love to Gobble You Up! By: Sandra Magsamen

This book doesn’t really tell much of a Thanksgiving story but instead offers a nice way for you remind your little one how loved they are! Babies and toddlers will also love feeling the soft felt of this cute book!

If your child is a fan of dogs and isn’t reading Biscuit books this is the perfect place to start! Biscuit is a sweet puppy that has all kinds of stories written about him! In this Thanksgiving story he shares many things he’s thankful for.

Don’t forget to ask your child what they are thankful for.

Pete the Cat: The First Thanksgiving By: James Dean

This books is perfect for Pete the Cat fans like my 1 year old that regularly yells “CAT!!” or “PETE!!” when he sees a Pete the Cat book! This book is full of fun lift the flaps and tells a basic story of Thanksgiving. It also includes characters that young kids who love Pete the Cat already know about.

Llama Llama By Anna Dewdney

Llama Llama is another series of books for toddlers and the Thanksgiving book is perfect for our littlest readers!

It offers information about the different foods that are often found at Thanksgiving. It has simple words and bright pictures which allows the teaching of different vocabulary words.

Little Critter Thanksgiving By: Mercer Mayer

The Little Critters are a classic series that still hold their own even today! My 3-year-old has been having me read these books with him for the past year. He loves the silly pictures and fun simple stories.

The Thanksgiving book is no different as it allows toddlers to get to experience Thanksgiving traditions through the eyes of someone else.

The Littlest Pilgrim By: Brandi Dougherty

Mini is the main character in this story and as her name says she’s too little or “mini” to do much around the village she lives in. But the lesson in this story is that even if you are little you’re never too little to make a friend.

As a teacher it’s one of my favorite books to read each year! We must continue to encourage our children to try different things even if they feel like they don’t have what they “need” to succeed.

Run, Turkey, Run! By: Diane Mayr

Who doesn’t love a fun turkey book for Thanksgiving? In this one, the farmer is trying to catch a turkey for his Thanksgiving feast! The turkey is trying to hide anywhere he can! What happens when the farmer comes next?

This book is perfect for acting out, doing a sequence activity with, or answering a writing prompt of “where would you hide?”.

The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks By: Jan & Mike Berenstain

The Berenstain Bears are classic for a good reason! They have characters that we can all learn to love that teach live lessons that are easy for kids to understand. This book is perfect for kids ages 4-8.

It gives kids a way to understand the Thanksgiving story on their level. I also like how they offer activities and ideas for conversation starters on the last cover.

Gobble Gobble Mr. Wobble By: Becky Cummings

When the turkey in this story find out that farmer is “having him for dinner”, he is incredibly flattered that he gets to be a guest for dinner!

Little does the turkey know that the farmer is instead planning to literally “have him for dinner”. I love how this book teaches kids how to think of things from someone else’s perspective which is perfect for teaching empathy and social skills.

If you are looking for more information on how to teach empathy to young children, you can read all about that in my post here.

This book is for older toddlers into the elementary years. It is the story of a farmer and a turkey named Tom. Tom is excited about his surprise from the farmer and can’t wait until his special day to see what it is! It ends with a bit of a turn and a laugh!

Hi, I'm Ashley E!

I teach moms and teachers how to inspire a love of reading in the early years. I live in Ohio with my husband & two boys. Our favorite places to be are at the beach & Disney World.
